V Rare Antique Vintage Mahogany GWR Travelling Safe Railway Train LNER BR Sign

A rare Great Western Railway travelling safe. A wonderful heavy duty GWR'travelling safe' in thick, solid mahogany with iron banding & over-sized carry handles either end. The front & top of the safe retain their original engraved brass plaques and the two large holes to the rear the rear panel & cast iron hasp inside are where the safety chain was attached in transit.
These old numbered safes rarely come onto the market & were used to transport valuables in transit, originally they were chained inside the handbrake column inside the guards compartment of the train. A super piece of history. 55cm x 38cm x 41cm approx. Wear commensurate with age, good solid condition, all original right down to the massive brass hinges inside. The only historical alterations appear to be the four bolts to the brass plaque to the lid are later and the lock has been removed probably when it was opened!Too heavy to post, UK courier service always available, please enquire with post code for details.
