Symbolism of: strength (Peru, Andes). First encounters: When the Incas were conquered by the Spaniards, different animals were introduced to Peru, among them the bull, the horse and the chicken. Story: This terracotta figure of a caballito (little horse) comes from the village of Pucará in Peru.
A local folk art that honors the Incan culture, which created stone figures of domestic animals as part of their religion, these hand made pottery pieces are more commonly in the form of bulls. The vessels, as is this one, are sometimes filled with chichi, fermented corn beer, or wine and, at times, is mixed with cattle blood to be drunk by a high priest conducting the ceremony. Believed to bring good luck and prosperity, these animals are often placed on the roofs of houses by inhabitants of the town. Note: Very unusual highly decorative object, tiny bit of crackles and wear on some parts, some chips on hoofs, handle was glued back in, beautifully hand coloured in Sancai colours (off white-yellow-green), no glaze.
