This was a working watch for many years and as such shows normal age related wear and tear from normal use. And then re stamped'PTR&D' which is struck through. It is numbered twice with the number 26 struck through again and re-stamped 3693.
THE GWR ENGRAVING IS A LITTLE WORN BUT IT CAN STILL BE SEEN and the other engravings are very clear. I can see NO tooling damage. The inside of the case is crudely engraved with'PTRAD' I have gently polished the case, and it is shining really well. It is in good, original condition. THE WATCH MEASURES 5.4CMS (54mm) IN DIAMETER. There are no signs of abuse. This stunningly rare and collectible watch has a nice original brilliant white dial. The dial has some damage at 6 and 7 o'clock (see photos) and a few hairlines (all symptoms of its working life and originality). It has nice ROMAN black painted numerals, which are absolutely, crisp and clear with no apparent wear. The raised crystal is acrylic and seems to be in good condition. It shows light marks but is very nice. The beautiful antique spade style watch hands are blued steel and are in nice condition! This nice BUREN made FULLY SIGNED crown wind and set movement. The movement has 7 jewels. The watch runs and started to tick after a few turns of the crown. It has been lightly oiled by my watch maker. The balance has a decent action.
It keeps time to within about 5 mins per day and as always a FULL service is recommended for optimum performance, timekeeping and continued operation. It winds ok and the hands setting works as it should. The crown is in nice condition and the chain ring shows some normal light wear having been in use on the Railway. THIS IS ONE OF THE RARE RAILWAY WATCHES FROM MY COLLECTION THAT I HAVE HAD.AS SUCH EVEN IN THIS CONDITION IT STILL COMMANDS A PRICE DUE TO ITS RARITY. Please remember that vintage watches have survived for many decades by being treated well. Vintage watches are not for wearing while doing yard work, working out, or swimming. Vintage watches cannot keep time like their quartz cousins and will need altering on average between +-2 to +-5 mins per day. They are a little more destructible than modern watches.
Vintage watches also require periodic service and cleaning. Every couple of years, they would like their 20,000 mile checkup, oil change, and general service.
By taking care of your vintage watch, you will have years of great service, and a quality heirloom to pass to another generation. Please do not waste anyone's time if you are not interested.
